Forensic Psychology Services

New England Forensic Psychology offers a range of forensic services for courts, attorneys, agencies, and other authorized referral sources. Services are tailored to the referral question, the relevant jurisdiction, and the specific legal or administrative context of the case.

Competency to Stand Trial Evaluations

These evaluations address a defendant’s present ability to understand the nature and purpose of legal proceedings and to assist counsel in a rational and meaningful manner.

Criminal Responsibility / Mental State Evaluations

These evaluations examine psychological functioning and mental condition in relation to the defendant’s mental state at the time of the alleged offense, within the applicable jurisdictional standard.

Aid in Sentencing / Mitigation Evaluations

Mitigation and sentencing-focused evaluations may address developmental history, trauma, psychiatric symptoms, cognitive issues, substance use, psychosocial stressors, treatment needs, rehabilitation potential, and other factors relevant to sentencing or dispositional decision-making.

Violence Risk Assessment

Violence risk assessments are conducted using a structured, individualized approach and may address historical, clinical, contextual, and protective factors relevant to a given referral question. These evaluations may be requested in criminal, civil, institutional, or administrative matters.

Personal Injury & Emotional Damages Evaluations

These evaluations address psychological injury, emotional distress, trauma-related symptoms, functional impairment, and related damages questions arising in civil matters.

Substance Use & Addiction Evaluations

These evaluations address substance use disorders, addiction-related patterns, co-occurring mental health concerns, treatment needs, functional impact, relapse risk considerations, and the relationship between substance use and legal or administrative questions.

Firearm Licensing Evaluations

Firearm licensing evaluations may be conducted when a referral requires assessment of psychological functioning, risk-related concerns, clinical history, and other factors relevant to licensure, reinstatement, or related administrative decision-making.

Psychological Testing and Assessment

When clinically and forensically indicated, psychological testing may be incorporated to clarify diagnostic, cognitive, personality, or symptom-related issues.

Expert Consultation and Testimony

Services may include consultation with counsel, review of existing records or reports, case formulation support, and expert testimony when retained and appropriate.
