 New England Forensic Psychology provides forensic specialists and trained clinicians who can bridge the gap between the criminal justice system and the mental health system. Our team has varied experience in the areas of forensic evaluation, psychological testing and assessment and psychotherapy


 Our expertise is in the area of clinical and forensic assessment of individuals in the context of legal, educational, and personnel matters. 

 

Attorney Case Consultation

New England Forensic Psychology may be retained as a consultant in legal cases involving mental health issues. As a consultant, we becomes a member of the defense or prosecution team rather than an independent testifying expert. Consultation services include:

  • Case analysis and development
  • Reviewing records to identify salient mental health issues
  • Explaining psychological testing results, diagnoses, and multifaceted psychological issues
  • Assisting in the development of direct and cross-examination strategies
  •  Aid in sentencing reports
  • Competency to stand trial
  • Competency to understand Miranda warning
  • Competency to confess and suggestibility
  • Criminal responsibility and diminished capacity
  • Risk assessments

The use of psychological consultants is increasingly recognized as a critical component of a successful legal strategy in cases involving mental health issues. We have the capacity to translate complex psychological concepts into plain language provides a significant advantage in achieving a desired legal outcome.

 

Mitigation Evaluations:


  • Specialized experience evaluating mitigating factors including, major mental disorders, community violence, corruptive modeling, multi-generational trauma, family dysfunction, and substance dependence
  • Ability to synthesize and clearly communicate research on incomplete brain development, prior to the age of 25, on young adult crime-related factors including impulsive decision making, faulty values, poor judgment, and empathy deficits
  • Extensive training and experience assessing the risk for future recidivism as may be relevant to sentencing determinations

  • Competency to stand trial evaluator
  • Competency evaluations involving adjudicative competency, testamentary competency, competency to waive their rights, contractual competency, competency to make medical decisions, and retrospective assessment of competency.
